The company expanded internationally into Europe in 1975 and the first Irish stores were opened in 1979. Marks and Spencer encountered difficulties in the late nineties due to increasing competition with overseas suppliers and the refusal to accept credit cards other than their own store card. A successful advertising campaign and new clothing ranges, such as ‘Per Una’ designed to attract and re-gain younger fashionable customers has meant the store’s popularity is rising again. Currently, Marks and Spencer has almost 850 branches internationally.

The main concepts and aims of the company were to provide quality goods at fair and affordable prices. Planned for the future include a greater emphasis and focus on making the business sustainable, through becoming carbon neutral and sending no waste to landfill sites. Major product lines include menswear, ladieswear, childrenswear, food, wine, technology, flowers, home wear, financial services and lingerie.

Marks and Spencer’s lingerie includes many different styles and designs so that there is something suitable for every woman. Specialist underwear such as post surgery bras, maternity bras and bridal lingerie are also available to cater for every need. Marks and Spencer also has an ‘Angel First’ lingerie range for young girls and teenagers buying their first bra. For women bra sizes range from AA to J cups and knickers are available up to a size 28. Marks and Spencer also have a wide range of nightwear, hosiery, shapewear, slips and thermal underwear.
